Watering Ordinance

Update: June 27, 2007 - Riverton City is receiving complaints that there is not enough pressure in the secondary water system. This is a result of excessive demand. Our secondary water collection and distribution system is designed to provide sufficient water for irrigation purposes, however, unbridled use results in an inadequate supply.

In an effort to alleviate the present situation, Mayor and Council have suspended secondary water use restrictions. Until further notice, outdoor irrigation will be permitted twenty four (24) hours per day, seven days per week as long as water is available in the irrigation canals. This should minimize peak demand and provide sufficient pressure to irrigate in accordance with the published guidelines. If you have questions or concerns please contact the Riverton Water Department at 208-3117.

Outside Ordinance Fine Schedule

The City Council has enacted a new ordinance declaring penalties that shall be assessed for daytime watering violations. Following are the penalties outlined in the ordinance:

1st Violation                                            Warning
2nd Violation within 12 month period            $  50
3rd Violation within 12 month period             $100
4th Violation within 12 month period             $200
5th Violation within 12 month period             $400
6th or more violations - 12 month period      $750

Fines may be cut in half if a workshop is attended as specified by Riverton City. There is also a water shortage management plan, which mandates wasteful and unreasonable use of water. Enforcement of this plan can involve flow restrictors being placed in facility meters.

On May 21, 2002 Riverton City adopted two ordinances to govern the use of outside watering. The first ordinance mandates there will be no outside watering between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Provisions have been made for new lawn seed and sod. Testing sprinkler systems for a very short period and water users that sprinkle with canal shares having designated watering times are acceptable.

The second ordinance outlines waste or squandering of water shall be unlawful. Riverton secondary water running down gutters, into neighbors yards, streets, etc. and flood irrigation with Riverton secondary water is not acceptable.

Fines will be imposed and could be as high as $750.00 per offense. Remember we live in a desert. With the past three years of low snow pack, we all need to be cautious of our watering habits.

Typical of any new construction there are various bugs and kinks that are being worked out.  Please call the water department if you are experiencing problems. For scheduling secondary water connection inspections, call 208-3112.
